5.2.5 CM and CPE Provisioning and Management

Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specifications DOCSIS 3.0 - MAC and Upper Layer Protocols Interface Specification

5.2.5 CM and CPE Provisioning and Management

5.2.5.1 Initialization, Provisioning and Management of CMs5

1) Topology resolution and physical layer initialization,

2) Authentication and encryption initialization

3) IP initialization

4) Registration (MAC layer initialization)

1)

A. CM acquires a single downstream and upstream channel and receives broadcast information from the CMTS.

B. Initialize the upstream physical layer by "ranging" on a selected upstream channel.

Provisional MAC layer initialization has been performed

2)

Authentication and encryption initialization

A. CM sending its X.509 digital certificate to the CMTS for validation.

B. CMTS will respond with a message to encrypt the upstream and downstream data transmissions

    i. This can be disable (if yes)

After registration stage (step 4) will authentication and encryption initialization again.

Detail [DOCSIS SECv3.0].

3)

The CM acquires an IP address in the Cable Operator address space, as well

as the current time-of-day, and a binary configuration file.

DOCSIS 3.0 defines use of IP version 4 and IP version 6 and four provisioning modes:

A. IPv4 Only

the CM uses DHCPv4 to acquire an IPv4 address and operational related parameters.

B. IPv6 Only

The CM uses DHCPv6 to acquire an IPv6 address and operational parameters

C. Alternate

Alternate Provisioning Mode (APM)

Attempting IPv6 provisioning first.

Attempting IPv4 provisioning next.

D. Dual-stack

Dual-stack Provisioning Mode (DPM)

DHCPv6 and DHCPv4 almost simultaneously,

4)

Registration

Three-way handshake between the CM and the CMTS

a. CM pass configuration file to CMTS..

b. CMTS validates the contents to CM

CM acknowledges receipt of the CMTS’s response,

The MAC layer initialization is complete.

After the CM completes initialization

Manageable network element in the operator’s IP network. (CM supports SNMP)

[Docsis] T3 and T4 Timeouts

[Docsis] T3 and T4 Timeouts

Role play :

School (CMTS)

bus (MAP)

Student's House (CM)

Ring (RNG-RSP)

policy (T4 timeout)

T3 timeout -

School send a bus to student house.

Student get on the bus.

Bus arrive school.

School will make a call to notify Student's father.

If Student's father don't receive the ring.

This was called T3 timeout.

T4 timeout -

When bus don't come back to school.

School will send another bus for student.

Student's father not receive ring for 15 times.

Student's father call policy.

This was called T4 timeout.

[Docsis][MDD] MAC Domain Descriptor (MDD)

[Docsis][MDD] MAC Domain Descriptor (MDD)

MAC Domain Descriptor (MDD)

MDD messages are periodically transmitted on all Downstream Channel(s) of DOCSIS 3.0 CMTSs.

The MDD message contains

1.Downstream Channel ID of the Primary Downstream Channel.

The cable modem will read the MDD and know immediately where to tune

1. lock on to the Primary Downstream Channel.

The MDD can

load balancing cable modems in a DOCSIS 3.0 network.

The MDD also contains additional information for the cable modem

1. available downstream channels

2. available upstream channels

3. upstream frequency range and more.
