Dear Councillor
Re : Kings Street Theatre
In a recent Council newlsetter, we were concerned to read that the council is
considering a plan to sell the old King St Theatre to developers for office space.
In response to your request for residents opinions, we are writing to express our strong objections to the plan.
In the first place we believe the theatre is a beautiful old building. It may need a few
repairs, but it is worth saving and restoring because it adds a lot of charm to the area.
Many of our historical buildings have already been lost, and we don't want to lose another.
Tourism is important to our country and buildings like the King St Theatre are
an attraction for both visitors and local residents.
If the theatre is sold to developers it will be almost certainly demolished and we feel that an important bit of history and much used facility will disappear.
Secondly, why do we need to develop new office space? There are several office blocks in the area that have large areas of floor space unoccupied.
Furthermore, the theatre still serves a useful purpose. The theatre is used to present plays and workshops.
It is one of very few small theatres left in Perth and without it small
theatre companies would find it difficult to stage a production.
many community groups hold their meetings there and it is also used by school groups for concerts.
We sincerely hope that you will support us and vote against the plan in Council.
Yours faithfully,
Bill Shakespeare
