Dear Councillor
Re : Kings Street Theatre
In a recent Council newlsetter, we were concerned to read that the council is
considering a plan to sell the old King St Theatre to developers for office space.
In response to your request for residents opinions, we are writing to express our strong objections to the plan.
In the first place we believe the theatre is a beautiful old building. It may need a few
repairs, but it is worth saving and restoring because it adds a lot of charm to the area.
Many of our historical buildings have already been lost, and we don't want to lose another.
Tourism is important to our country and buildings like the King St Theatre are
an attraction for both visitors and local residents.
If the theatre is sold to developers it will be almost certainly demolished and we feel that an important bit of history and much used facility will disappear.
Secondly, why do we need to develop new office space? There are several office blocks in the area that have large areas of floor space unoccupied.
Furthermore, the theatre still serves a useful purpose. The theatre is used to present plays and workshops.
It is one of very few small theatres left in Perth and without it small
theatre companies would find it difficult to stage a production.
many community groups hold their meetings there and it is also used by school groups for concerts.
We sincerely hope that you will support us and vote against the plan in Council.
Yours faithfully,
Bill Shakespeare

Who Are the Gypsies?
In the fourteenth century, Gypsies wandered through North Africa and then on into Europe. The name 'Gypsy' was given to them in the fifteenth century when they said they had been driven from Egypt for not giving up their Christian beliefs. They probably hoped that people would feel sorry for them.
Gypsies have lived like nomads for centuries. They have survived by begging, fortune-telling, giving musical performances and sometimes mending pots and pans. They were often accused of stealing children of which they were quite innocent and of cheating and thieving. They were cruelly persecuted in almost every country in which they moved. Hitler, the German dictator, had thousands of them killed by sending them to the gas chambers. Nevertheless, there are many Gypsies today who jealously guard their customs and traditions that have been handed down from generation to generation.
Thousands of Gypsies, all speaking dialects of the same language, roam the world. Every continent has them, including Australasia. They seldom remain in an area for long, so home for them is generally a caravan. They used to rely on horses for pulling their carts and homes but now they are motorised.

Water aerobics class halted by croc in pool
A water aerobics class in Darwin had to be postponed this morning after a crocodile entered the pool.
The 1.5 metre freshwater croc was spotted in the Howard Springs Holiday Park pool about 30 minutes before the class was due to start.
"We went down like normal to check the pools out - chlorineand test them, give them a scoop out -because [on] Tuesdays and Thursdays the local ladies of Howard Springs do their water aerobics ," the park's manager, Geoff Thompson said.
"And there was a crocodile in there."
He said none of the women werekeen to start the class at the scheduled time.
"They were all there waiting for the ranger to collect it and once he got it out of the water they started their aerobics," he said.
Mr Thompson said he first thought someone must have deliberatelyput the croc in the pool because it has a fence around it.
But he now believes it slipped under a section of the fence.
Parks and Wildlife senior ranger Tom Nichols said his team removed the crocodile about 9am.
"The crocodile gave one of the crocodile management rangers a bit of a run around, having to chase it around the pool, but he managed to capture and remove it with a scoop net," he said.
"The crocodile did not have any markings so we believe it to be a wild animal.
"While we can't be sure how it got there, it's likely it came through the swamps that join up from the Howard River."
He said rangers also removed two saltwater crocodiles, one of which was 3.5 metres long, from traps in Darwin Harbour today.
